Beautiful landscape, steep hills

n contrast to the quiet Saturday evening, Sunday was really busy on the main road. We were glad to leave the road at noon for a stop at the beautiful Lake Waihola. So we lingered realtively long on the Pic Nic area of Waihola until we drove fully fed to the coast. If we had known the route, the lunch menu would have been different. The hamburgers and french fries, as well as ice cream for dessert, are not exactly light food for one of the steepest hills we have experienced so far. So we had to fight a very long climb against an extremely biting hill, against full stomachs and heavy luggage. The descent was not less steep. So once again all three brakes were needed. But this was only a foretaste of what was still to come. Before reaching the city of Dunedin, which is known for its steepest road in the world, one has to climb a steep hill, no matter from which direction one arrives. The road, as is so often the case in New Zealand, went straight up the hill and no distance was wasted with unnecessary curves reducing the gradient. When we crested the last hill, we agreed that the kilojoules of ice cream were now completely converted into potential energy :-)
On this visit to Dunedin, we chose a seaside campground. The campground on the last visit we would have reached only via a very steep road, which was steep enough for us about a week ago even without luggage.
