Drive to the First Nations Camp in Champagne
Leaving Haines Junction, we visited the Village Bakery to have a good refreshment for the day with "real" pastries.
After the past rainy days we could now enjoy really good cycling weather again. With sunshine and a tailwind, it's just wonderful riding!
On the way we stopped at Canyon Creek to have a look at a restored bridge from the time before the Alaska Highway was built.
After lunch we met the couple from France traveling with bicycles that we had already been told about in Glenallen. In the short discussion we found out that we will be on the same ferry later.
In the hostel we had agreed with Marthe, Ed and Frank to spend the night in Champagne at the First Nations Camp. Therefore, we turned onto the old highway before Champagne. On this very lightly traveled road we saw a coyote for the first time, which crossed the road right in front of us.
In the First Nations Camp we got a very good guided tour about the life of the native people of North America. The guide said that wilderness is something relative. If he wanted to see something wild, he would go to Whitehorse (the next bigger place) and see the people there. Here in the forest everything is natural.
